I met Grant, Senior Barber and owner at Barnet Fair Barbershop, in my mid-teens and he’s been cutting my hair since. Actually, I can’t think of the last time someone else cut my hair.
Grant’s been in the barber scene since barbershops started to pop-off in Christchurch, some ten years ago. As a marketer supported by Grant’s experience barbering, we would often discuss what the ideal barbershop should represent and the level of service that could be offered. Overtime, the barber scene in Christchurch deviated further and further away from our thinking and as we make new friends in the shop we’ve also learned that some of us lads still haven’t quite made the shift from a simple cut at a regular salon to the barbershop. Look, we don’t want to kill your vibe if you’re just looking for a simple cut, but regular haircuts come with regular outcomes and a huge sense of predictability. You walk into a salon, get your haircut, and leave all without much deviation from the routine. As soon as you step inside Barnet Fair Barbershop you’ll notice the abundance of character. This is easily achieved when it sits on top of one of Christchurch’s oldest pubs, Pomeroy’s. Its traditional brickwork, reinforced steel, and wooden rafters are complemented by a modern barbershop fit-out that is unlike any barbershop in town. It also includes a spacious lounge that will make you feel right at home while you wait and enjoy a hazy pale ale (we’d recommend the onsite brew by the Beer Baroness) from downstairs. Did I forget to mention the restaurant’s Spicy Fried Chicken Burger? It’s arguably the best fried chicken burger in Christchurch. I’ll leave that up to you to judge.
